Here's your regular service reminder that $48k/year sounds like a dream come true to people who have never made a living off their art or comics before, until you factor in the following:
Cost of assistants which is out-of-pocket (some creators literally don't hire assistants because of this which makes the process of meeting their deadlines even harder)
Cost of additional tools necessary to making webtoons and meeting deadlines, such as paying for drawing software, 3D models, etc.
Cost of emergency services such as healthcare are not covered by WT, so if your health deteriorates while you're working on your comic (which it often does for many creators whose bodies are destroyed from working long hours at a desk 7 days a week), WT will not help you.
No paid vacation time, no paid sick leave, no accommodations for people with kids, disabilities, etc. meaning if you have to take time off, WT will not be covering it.
Speaking of vacation time, Webtoons ONLY pays creators for completed and submitted episodes, meaning they will not pay you for pre-production time leading up to a series release OR have your back when you have to go on hiatus. Some creators manage multiple series to make ends meet and avoid stretches of unpaid hiatuses (IIRC I believe KitTrace does this with Nevermore and Shiloh rotating on and off hiatus one at a time) and others simply have to go without pay relying solely on their Patreons and other forms of income when they go on hiatus. And, as we've seen in the past, when they return from hiatus is often up to Webtoons, not them.
That $48k is basically just an average ballpark of what Webtoons pays creators for a season of content, and for those who recall, FastPass earnings are not given to creators until they make back that payment.
It's really hard to get people to FastPass when Webtoons is deliberately not advertising your series and, in some cases, outright SABOTAGING your attempts to advertise.
I don't even know if that $48k is before or AFTER taxes, I'm assuming before considering this is a self-employment contract, meaning you likely have to put away a good few thousand for taxes depending on your state tax rate and what you're able to write off. This also includes having to track assistant expenditures for filing.
The 60-80+ hour weeks many creators are having to pull to meet their deadlines turns that $48k/year into an ASTOUNDING drum roll ... $11 - $15/hour! Which is just barely over minimum wage in many states, and absolutely 100% not a living wage in most! And that's BEST CASE scenario in which you don't pay an assistant, don't suffer any health expenses, don't pay for 3D models / software, and POSSIBLY don't pay your taxes. Yaaaaay! 😒🖕
TL : DR $48k/year hasn't been a salary worth bragging about since 2005 ESPECIALLY not for such high-demand specialized work like this, fuck you Webtoons <3

Pain emerges as dominant symptom in long Covid, UCL study reveals - Published Aug 28, 2024
Pain may be the most prevalent and severe symptom reported by individuals with long Covid, according to a new study led by UCL (University College London) researchers.
The study, published in JRSM Open, analysed data from over 1,000 people in England and Wales who logged their symptoms on an app between November 2020 and March 2022.
Pain, including headache, joint pain and stomach pain, was the most common symptom, reported by 26.5% of participants.
The other most common symptoms were neuropsychological issues such as anxiety and depression (18.4%), fatigue (14.3%), and dyspnoea (shortness of breath) (7.4%). The analysis found that the intensity of symptoms, particularly pain, increased by 3.3% on average each month since initial registration.
The study also examined the impact of demographic factors on the severity of symptoms, revealing significant disparities among different groups. Older individuals were found to experience much higher symptom intensity, with those aged 68-77 reporting 32.8% more severe symptoms, and those aged 78-87 experiencing an 86% increase in symptom intensity compared to the 18-27 age group.
Gender differences were also pronounced, with women reporting 9.2% more intense symptoms, including pain, than men. Ethnicity further influenced symptom severity, as non-white individuals with long Covid reported 23.5% more intense symptoms, including pain, compared to white individuals.
The study also explored the relationship between education levels and symptom severity. Individuals with higher education qualifications (NVQ level 3, 4, and 5 – equivalent to A-levels or higher education) experienced significantly less severe symptoms, including pain, with reductions of 27.7%, 62.8%, and 44.7% for NVQ levels 3, 4 and 5 respectively, compared to those with lower education levels (NVQ level 1-2 – equivalent to GCSEs).
Socioeconomic status, as measured by the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD), also influenced symptom intensity. Participants from less deprived areas reported less intense symptoms than those from the most deprived areas. However, the number of symptoms did not significantly vary with socioeconomic status, suggesting that while deprivation may exacerbate symptom intensity, it does not necessarily lead to a broader range of symptoms.
Our study highlights pain as a predominant self-reported symptom in long Covid, but it also shows how demographic factors appear to play a significant role in symptom severity.
With ongoing occurrences of Covid-19 (e.g., LB.1, or D-FLiRT variants), the potential for more long Covid cases remains a pressing concern. Our findings can help shape targeted interventions and support strategies for those most at risk."
-Dr. David Sunkersing, Lead Author, UCL Institute of Health Informatics
In the paper, the researchers called for sustained support for long Covid clinics and the development of treatment strategies that prioritize pain management, alongside other prevalent symptoms like neuropsychological issues and fatigue.
Given the significant impact of demographic factors on symptom severity, the study underscored the need for healthcare policies that addressed these disparities, ensuring equitable care for all individuals affected by long Covid, the researchers said.
Study limitations included a lack of information on other health conditions participants may have had and a lack of information about health history. The researchers cautioned that the study may have excluded individuals with very severe Covid and those facing technological or socioeconomic barriers in accessing a smartphone app.
The study was led by the UCL Institute of Health Informatics and the Department of Primary Care and Population Health at UCL in collaboration with the software developer, Living With Ltd.

What is Functional Neurological Disorder
What is Functional Neurological Disorder??
Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) describes a Problem with how the brain Receives and sends information to the rest of the body.
It's often helpful to think of your brain as a computer. In someone who has FND, there's no damage to the hardware, or structure, of the brain. It's the software, or program running on the computer, that isn't working properly.
The problems in FND are going on in a level of the brain that you cannot control. It includes symptoms like arm and leg weakness and seizures. Other symptoms like fatigue or pain are not directly caused by FND but are often found alongside it.
Symptoms of FND
FND can have many symptoms that can vary from person to person. Some people may have few symptoms, and some people may have many.
Functional Limb Weakness
Functional Seizures
Functional Tremor
Functional Dystonia
Functional Gait Disorder
Functional Facial Spasm
Functional Tics
Functional Jerks and Twitches
Functional Drop Attacks
Functional Sensory Symptoms
Functional Cognitive Symptoms
Functional Speech and Swallowing Difficulties
Persistent Postural Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD)
Functional Visual Symptoms
Dissociative Symptoms
Common associated symptoms or conditions??
There are other symptoms or conditions that are commonly associated with FND. These include:
·      Chronic Pain, Including Fibromyalgia, Back and Neck Pain, And Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
·      Persistent Fatigue
·      Sleep Problems including Insomnia (Not sleeping Enough) and Hypersomnia (Sleeping too much)
·      Migraines and other Types of Headaches and Facial Pain
·      Irritable Bowel Syndrome and other Problems with the Function of your Stomach and Bowel
·      Anxiety and Panic Attacks
·      Depression
·      Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
·      Chronic Urinary Retention
·      Dysfunctional Breathing
What causes FND?
·      We know that the symptoms of FND happen because there's a problem with how the brain is sending and receiving messages to itself and other parts of the body. Using research tools, scientists can see that certain circuits in the brain are not working properly in people with FND.
·      However, there's still a lot of research to be done to understand how and why FND happens.
Why does FND happen?
FND can happen for a wide range of reasons. There's often more than one reason, and the reasons can vary hugely from person to person.
Some of the reasons why the brain stops working properly in FND include:
the brain trying to get rid of a painful sensation.
a migraine or other neurological symptom
the brain shutting down a part or all of the body in response to a situation it thinks is threatening
In some people, stressful events in the past or present can be relevant to FND. In others, stress is not relevant.
The risk of developing FND increases if you have another neurological condition.
Diagnosing FND
When diagnosing FND, your healthcare provider will carry out an assessment to see if there are typical clinical features of FND.
Your healthcare provider may still choose to test for other diseases and conditions before diagnosing FND. This is because many conditions share the same symptoms and, in around a quarter of cases, FND is present alongside another neurological condition. Someone can have both FND and conditions like sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, epilepsy, or multiple sclerosis (MS).
The diagnosis of FND, however, should be given because you have the clinical features of FND. It shouldn't be given just because there's no evidence of other conditions or illnesses.
Because the symptoms of FND are not always there, your healthcare provider may ask you to video your symptoms when they are bad so they can see what's happening to you.
Treatments
FND is a variable condition. Some people have quite short-lived symptoms. Others can have them for many years.
There are treatments available that can manage and improve FND. These treatments are all forms of rehabilitation therapy, which aims to improve your ability to carry out every day activities. Many of these treatments are designed to "retrain the brain". Some people with FND benefit a lot from treatment and may go into remission. Other people continue to have FND symptoms despite treatment.
Treatments are:
·      Physiotherapy
·      Occupational Therapy
·      Psychological Therapy
·      Speech, Language and Swallowing Therapy
·      Medication (Antidepressants, Neuropathic Painkillers)
Who is at risk of FND?
No single process has been identified as being sufficient to explain the onset of FND. Several interacting factors biologically, psychologically, and socially can cause vulnerabilities, triggers and maintaining factors that contribute to FND.
Why is this happening to me?
There are usually several underlying biopsychosocial factors which play a role in the development of FND. Some of these factors contribute to making the brain vulnerable, trigger FND episodes and prevent people from getting better. Injury and pain can be a common trigger. Anxiety, depression, and traumatic life experiences can also contribute to making brains vulnerable to FND.

Firstly, what is a stoma?
A stoma is an opening made through the wall of the abdomen (tummy), connected to either the digestive or urinary system, to allow the diversion of waste, either urine or faeces, out of the body. It is a surgically created opening where part of the bowel or urinary tract is brought to the skin surface to create that new opening. It will resembling a small, pinkish, circular opening. The person with a stoma usually wears a pouch on top of it, with this either being closed, or having an opening at the bottom.
Stoma surgery may be undertaken as part of the treatment for a variety of diseases and conditions, ranging from bowel cancer or bladder cancer to Crohn’s disease and cases of trauma to the abdomen. A stoma may be temporary or permanent.
With it being estimated that about one in 335 people in the UK currently have a stoma, and there not being just one type of stoma, it is important for healthcare professionals to possess a good understanding of how they can care for and support people living with a stoma.
